First, I want to thank the generations of soapmakers before me for paving the
way and providing the bases for Lone Star Naturals. Without your hard work I
could not do the job I love so much, making natural soap products.
Hi, I am soapmaker, chief cook, & dishwasher Irlynda Smith. I would like
to tell you about my history of making soap.
Starting back in the summers of the early 1960's, I
began cooking and rendering lard for soapmaking with my paternal grandmother (my
hero) while the rest of the family worked in the fields on my grandparent's farm
in rural Mississippi. I had a choice; hoe cotton or make soap; hoe cotton or
tend garden; hoe cotton or cook meals - the choice was an easy one for me! These
were great summers of hard work rooted deeply in my mind and heart.
My mother is a vibrant Hawaiian and in my childhood we lived in my beloved
islands. My heritage is the seeds of my knowledge of herbs and the helpful
properties they possess.
Early in my life I began experimenting with my eclectic mix of island and
southern heritage. It has been a Blessing to be a chef helping people on their
best days and their worst days, catering everything from weddings to funerals.
Working 12 to 14 hour days on my feet balancing my careers as a chef and a
paramedic took their toll on me.
I reentered the world soapmaking after reading the labels on commercial
soaps. The commercial "soap" were full of mythel ethyl nasty stuff and most of
them weren't even soap! I started with the 2 base formulas handed down to me by
my Mamaw and blossomed into a few soap formulas for my family and friends. Then
cancer invaded our lives. My son, mom & a close friend were diagnosed with
cancer within 6 months of each other. Cancer drugs and radiation blistered,
irritated and seemingly thinned their skin. Commercial "soaps" just made it
worse. I started making more soap and giving them away to cancer patients across
the country. The need for my own business affording me the time needed to
dedicate to my family became obvious. So is born Lone Star Naturals.
We started adding to our line of soap as clients requested more products. I
am able to use my background in chemistry and herbs to building formulas for our
soap & sundries. Well, after my first year, the business just took off! I
now sell wholesale and do fundraisers for girls clubs, local schools and non
profit organizations.
My helpers are my wonderful husband who loads everything, wraps product and
does a never-ending honey-do-list, my daughter when she can (full time mom of
awesome grandbabies) and my son, who can sell anything to anyone! My sisters in
Christ tie on ribbons and do labeling as needed. I do all the formulations,
production, pouring, sorting, order taking, advertising, shipping and maintain
the website. I also work as a volunteer rescue/medic with the local EMS and the
local fire department, run the food bank and kitchen at my church and run a goat
ranch in my spare time.
Make no mistake, we are not a cosmetic company nor do we want to be. We
adhere to FDA rules for cosmetics because we want our customer to know every
ingredient in our products.
We live by our commitment of keeping our products as natural as possible and
inform our customers of all the ingredients in our products. Most of our
ingredients such as herbs, loofahs, goat's milks and flowers are grown right
here on our ranch or by a neighbor close by.
